Van Dijk admits dream come true at netting first Southampton goal

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk was delighted to score his first goal for the Saints in the 3-1 win over Swansea City on Saturday.

The 24-year-old defender opened the scoring at St Mary's after 11 minutes through a header from James Ward-Prowse's corner and admits it was a great feeling after making the step up from the Scottish Premiership with Celtic.

"Scoring today is a dream for me," said Van Dijk. "Being in the Premier League and also scoring is an amazing feeling. We needed to win. And we deserved this win.

"It takes time to settle in. It's not easy to adapt (from the Scottish League) and you need a few games. But everyone has been helping me which makes it a lot easier.

"We talk to each other, communicate on the pitch and the team spirit is very good. That's always the basis of a good team. It's been an amazing move for me and the feeling I have right now is very good.

"The biggest thing for me has been getting used to the tempo of the PL. Maybe because there are other Dutch guys around the club and guys like Fraser (Foster) and Victor (Wanyama) who I've played with before it makes it a lot easier and that is starting to show on the pitch. I'm confident in myself and know what I can bring to the team."
