Van der Sar says Man Utd can still resurrect season under coach he rates higher than Ferguson

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar has revealed he rates current Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal as the best manager he's ever had.

The Old Trafford legend has indicated that van Gaal rates above Sir Alex Ferguson and believes the Dutchman can still guide United to silverware this season.

Van der Sar played under van Gaal at Ajax early in his career, with the pair winning the European Cup (Champions League) title in 1995 with the Dutch giants.

"For myself he's the best coach I ever had. The way he does technical stuff, how he trained us, as young players, we learned the trade of being football players, we all listened to him," Van der Sar said in a talk at the Oxford Union on Wednesday.

"He was very demanding, but we had success so then it doesn't matter how many times the coach wants to train."

Van der Sar likened van Gaal's reign at Old Trafford to the start of the former Bayern Munich manager's tenure at Ajax and was adamant the Red Devils can still finish the current campaign in a successful fashion.

"They are too far away from the top but they still have two opportunities for trophies," Van der Sar said.

"His first year at Ajax (1992) too our team was not playing that great. But that year we won the UEFA cup. In the league we came fourth and also won the UEFA cup.

"There is still an opportunity (for United) to win the Europa League and they're still in the FA Cup. The Champions League places may be difficult but it's still possible. So its not done yet."
