Valencia fullback Jose Luis Gaya tells Barcelona: Sometimes refs hurt you, sometimes they benefit you

Valencia fullback Jose Luis Gaya insists Sunday's draw with Barcelona was a fair result.

Gaya opened up on the controversial referee call that disallowed Lionel Messi's clear goal in Sunday's game at the Estadio Mestalla.

"They are talking a lot about the goal not given to Messi," the defender said to reporters.

"Sometimes [referees] hurt you and sometimes they benefit you.

"There's nothing more to say, it's practically forgotten.

"The draw was fair because each team dominated a part of the game."

The defender went on to insist that the controversy surrounding Messi's goal should not take away Valencia's credit for playing well against a strong rival, especially in the second half of the game.

"I think it was a great match," he said.

"The first part was more so theirs, but they did not reach the goal much.

"We had a great second half and were about to beat them and in the end."
