Former Real Madrid GM Jorge Valdano believes his old club had to sell Mesut Ozil to Arsenal because of massive debts. The Gunners splashed out £42.5m to lure him to the Emirates, just a day after Real paid £86m for Tottenham star Gareth Bale.
Valdano said: "The main thing is that the club's debt is 541m (£456m). The figure paid for Bale seems outrageous.
"Ozil was cheap and has been sold for more. That will impact positively on the accounts but the enormous expenses have continued to accumulate."
