USA U23s open Olympic qualifiers with huge win over Cuba

The USA U23 side kicked off their 2012 London Olympic Games qualifying with an easy 6-0 win over Cuba on Thursday.

Tijuana winger Joe Corona was named Man of the Match for his three-goal performance with Philadelphia Union ace Freddy Adu netting twice and a Cuban own-goal completing the rout.

Despite the massive victory, US boss Caleb Porter feels his side - who scored four goals before half-time - were ont good enough in the opening 45 minutes.

"I thought they were a little soft overall in the first half as a group," he said.

"Those three guys (midfielders Corona, Mikkel Diskerud and Jared Jeffrey), I thought, could have been a little bit harder through the middle. We want to win the ball back within six seconds, and I thought [Cuba] had a little bit more of the ball in the first half than we wanted them to."

Nevertheless, the result was a winning one and allows the US to go into Saturday's match against Canada with some confidence even if Porter wasn't completely thrilled with the performance.
