USA through to second round of U17 World Cup

USA have progressed to the next round of the FIFA U17 World Cup in Nigeria after defeating UAE 1-0.

A first-half goal by Jack McInerney separated the sides and ensured that the US would book their place in the round of 16 after finishing second in Group E.

Coach Wilmer Cabrera was delighted his side had bounced back from an opening match defeat to Spain to get through to the next stage of the tournament.

"We are really pleased with today's performance," said Cabrera.

"I want to congratulate UAE, who have a very good team and were very competitive.

"The play was very good from the kids tonight. They moved the ball around well and created good opportunities. We came to play good football, play a good match and move the ball forward. We were only able to score once, but that one was enough to give us the chance to get to the next round."
