US Soccer wishes Rogers well after calling retirement

Robbie Rogers decided to retire from professional soccer late last week.

The 25-year old winger, formerly of Columbus Crew, endured a difficult spell with English club Leeds United recently and has opted to end his playing time.

Rogers also announced publicly that he is gay - a decision he has been dwelling on for a number of years - with plenty of former teammates applauding him for the courage he has shown.

US Soccer has also commended Rogers who made over 100 MLS appearances and represented the USA on 18 occasions.

"As a Federation we support all our athletes who have had the courage to address this deeply personal topic," read the statement.

"We are proud of Robbie. He has been an outstanding representative of our National Team program for many years.

"We support him and wish him great success in the future."
