A stunt pulled by FC Dallas striker Jeff Cunningham recently shows that American soccer players in some instances are not that easily recognisable.
33-year old Cunningham, who has represented the USA national team almost 15 times and twice won the MLS Golden Boot award for most goals, attended a media day for Dallas and introduced himself as Freddy Adu.
The fact that Adu is actually 20 years of age and plays in Europe did not click with media attending the conference, and some could not recognise Cunningham as the 2009 league leading scorer, indicating that players have a long way to go in being recognised.
"My name is Freddy Adu, No. 9," Cunningham said to the camera before being asked to begin again. "I'm Freddy Adu. FC Dallas striker. No. 9. That's F-r-e-d-d-y-A-d-u. My season last year was ..."
He then went on to talk about Dallas' season without being questioned of who he really was despite the fact the real Adu is over in Greece with Aris Thessanoliki on loan from Portugal's Benfica.
