EUROPA LEAGUE: Tottenham held at Monaco after striking first

Tottenham drew 1-1 with Monaco in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Spurs scored first at Stade Louis II but were unable to hold onto their lead as the home side struck back in the second Group J fixture.

Erik Lamela continued on his good recent form by giving the North Londoners the lead on 35 minutes when he was on hand to simply slot home a loose ball that had fallen to him kindly after Dele Alli had forced his way through the Monaco defence only to see his shot were blocked by an advancing Danijel Subasic.

It appeared as though Mauricio Pochettino's men were headed for a deserved win on French soil only for Leonardo Jardim's Monaco to hit back in the 81st minute through Stephan El Shaarawy.

The Italian forward got on the end of a nice delivery from second-half sub Nabil Dirar to head goal-bound with a slight deflection seeing the ball squirm past Hugo Lloris.

The draw has Spurs sitting on top of the group table with four points, one clear of Azerbaijani side Qarabag who upset Anderlecht 1-0 in the other Group J contest.
