Under-fire Lambert determined to improve Aston Villa squad

Paul Lambert feels Aston Villa are in desperate need of new players before the winter transfer slams shut.

Villa were hammered 5-0 by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday to drop to 16th place on the Premier League table with their third defeat in a row.

Villa's season, after a bright start, has taken a massive downward dip evidenced by the fact they have scored just 11 goals in 23 matches and have not scored in the league since December 20.

With the transfer window set to close on Monday night (GMT), Villa face a race against time to bring in some new faces but Lambert suggests the club will be working hard to improve the faltering playing group who he feels do have enough character to avoid relegation.

"We have definitely got enough [to stay up]," he said after the heavy Arsenal defeat.

"If we can do one or two more [signings] then we will try. It is not easy to bring people in but if we can we will.

"I am looking for anybody who can improve the side."

Villa have already signed Spanish winger Carles Gil from Valencia and Scott Sinclair on loan from Manchester City this transfer period but need to add some more quality if they are to make a real fist of their survival campaign.
