UEFA inform Fiorentina that Lyon goal was legal

UEFA have informed Fiorentina that Lyon's opening goal in Wednesday night's 2-2 draw was perfectly legal.

The Viola were up in arms as their Ligue 1 hosts pulled the score back to 2-1 while Luciano Zauri was down injured, playing Frederic Piquionne onside.

But UEFA have confirmed that the goal was valid because referee Peter Fröjdfeldt didn't stop play.

"There's nothing to say about the goal because it was the referee's decision," spokesman William Gaillard insisted. "We tell the players clearly that they don't have to put the ball out if they see an opponent on the ground.

"It's not a question of fair play, but it's just so that we avoid too many interruptions. The referee is the only one who can stop play.

"If the official didn't believe Zauri's injury was serious then there is nothing to question."
