Shakhtar Donetsk became the last winners of the UEFA Cup by defeating Werder Bremen 2-1 in the final in Istanbul. Under 12,000 Werder Bremen and Shakhtar Donetsk fans travelled Istanbul for Wednesday night's Uefa Cup final which attracted an attendance of just over 53,000.
Reuters reports that the cost and the long journey convinced many to stay at home. Shakhtar sold 7,000 tickets, and Werder only 4,500 - each team had been allocated 11,000 tickets.
Reuters reports that Uefa said locals in Turkey helped to fill the stadium, where 43,000 tickets were available for the final.
