Two late Carew penalties give Villa 3-1 win over Palace

In a match that yielded three penalties, Aston Villa won through to the FA Cup quarter finals, defeating Championship outfit Crystal Palace 3-1.

The fifth round replay at Villa Park saw the home side enjoy most of the possession and plenty of shots on goal and it began well when Gabriel Agbonlahor headed home three minutes before half-time.

But Villa were stunned when Darren Ambrose converted a penalty in the 73rd minute after Stephen Warnock had brought down Alan Lee in the area.

It was to be the first of three late penalties but unfortunately for the Eagles, they went the way of their rivals.

Norway striker John Carew was brought down by Matthew Lawrence with ten minutes remaining and he duly tucked away his spot-kick before the same two players were involved in another tussle with a minute left.

Carew again stepped up to the spot and made no mistake, sending Martin O'Neill's men through to the next stage.
