Trapattoni won't select Villa keeper Given while he sits on bench

Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni will not select Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given while he's not playing.

The veteran Italian coach overlooked Given for this week's friendly win over Poland and turned instead to Millwall keeper David Forde.

Trapattoni said: "The goalkeeper is a slightly different role. If he is not playing it is very psychologically difficult for him. They get rusty.

"And at this time it's not just the fact that he is not playing, we have a project for the future with Westwood and Forde. And don't forget what he said - 'If you need, I will be ready'.

"Given is not playing in his club. I know we need the players who are playing the game. We have one or two or three who didn't play in their club.

"We need the players who play in the league. It's important - particularly with the goalkeeper.

"In my job I can't think about the big name. I have to think about the programme I have got to introduce new talent to keep the squad moving."
