Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni admits surprise over the continued Italy snub handed to Sampdoria striker Antonio Cassano.

“He gave me great satisfaction. When I was Italy Coach he was clearly the most talented young Italian,” Trapattoni said ahead of Ireland's World Cup qualifier against the Azzurri.

“Cassano is someone who scored a lot and created plenty of assists with me. Sure, I understand Lippi has made other choices. He has created another group and I don't want to interfere."
