Trapattoni hopeful over Man City's Ireland

Republic of Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni has held talks with Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland about ending his international retirement.

"He is a very important player for us. He is young, but he has quality," said Trapattoni.

"I have spoken with [Manchester City boss] Sven [Goran Eriksson] and he has said I will have to speak to him, but he has not said he is not coming [to Portugal].

"Sven has said if I talk to him, then it is possible he will come back because Stephen has never said he does not want to play for the national team again."
