Trapattoni blanks questions over Ireland battle for Wigan kid McCarthy

Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni will not publicly discuss the international future of Wigan Athletic starlet James McCarthy.

The Italian gaffer is still seething after Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland's controversial decision to turn his back on his country.

And he doesn't want to make waves over Scottish-born Wigan starlet McCarthy by speaking out of turn.

The former Hamilton kid looks set to be fast tracked into the full Irish squad to stop Scotland boss Craig Levein tempting him to play for the country of his birth.

But Trapattoni refused to confirm the 19-year-old will be called up for next month's friendly against Brazil.

Trapattoni said: "At the moment, it is better that we do not speak about this.

"Do you remember Steve Ireland? The more we speak, the more Steve Ireland goes away."
