“It’s hard at Tottenham because you have to compete with players from across Europe,” said Townsend, now on-loan at QPR, to the London Evening Standard. “We’ve had our best crop of youngsters at Spurs for goodness knows how long.
“It’s happened in the past at places like Manchester United but these days it’s difficult, if not impossible, to get a group of home-grown players playing in the first-team at the same time. That’s the way the game is now, with the money spent.
“But in a few years, four or five of us will be playing regularly in the Premier League, maybe even for England. I’ve no doubt about that at all. We know how tough it will be but we’ve all been given chances. It’s up to us to take them.”
