Francesco Totti struck a hat-trick as Roma thumped Gent 7-1 in last night's Europa League qualifier. "Totti is that player," grinned coach Luciano Spalletti. "He has quality, those moments that can change a match from free kicks or open play. He is phenomenal.

"Clearly we were aided by the fact Gent had a man sent off before half-time, but this time the team went out on form and concentrated. I'm convinced that, regardless of lucky incidents, we still would've taken home the win."

Totti was inspirational with his treble in Belgium, sending Roma through to the play-offs 10-2 on aggregate.

"The important thing was to go through," insisted the captain. "It was not an easy game and they were very motivated. Now we can go all the way in this competition, even if there is a long road ahead of us."
