Tottenham young gun Alli can claim Rooney role at Euro2016 - Hoddle

Former Tottenham Hotspur and England manager Glenn Hoddle believes Dele Alli is pushing hard for a starting spot for the Three Lions.

The 19-year-old midfield ace has come on in leaps and bounds since joining Spurs from League One MK Dons in the summer and according to Hoddle, could quite easily claim captain Wayne Rooney's starting spot in behind striker Harry Kane.

The ex-Spurs and England striker also suggested that the media should try to avoid making comparisons between young players like Alli and former heroes of the past.

"I like the idea of Rooney playing in the hole behind Kane and that's a role which would suit him at this stage of his career, but Alli is pushing hard to claim that position for himself at the moment," Hoddle said on ESPN, regarding the attacking formation Roy Hodgson could play at Euro2016.

"There is always a lot of hype around young players who catch the eye and that is especially the case when they are English. Comparisons to myself are not something I want to get into and it would not help him to be compared to anyone.

"He should be viewed as a great young talent in his own right and I'm not too surprised to see how well he is doing this season because I saw him at MK Dons last season and he always looked so calm on the ball, so comfortable in his surroundings."
