Tottenham winger Andros Townsend admits they must be wary of Jermain Defoe should he be available for Sunderland this weekend.

Defoe is waiting for international clearance but hopes to line up for new club Sunderland on his old stomping ground at White Hart lane tomorrow.

Townsend said: "Jermain is a fantastic character who served this club well. If he plays for Sunderland I am sure the fans will give him the reception he deserves.

"He is a legend at Spurs, the number of goals he has scored for us over the years is fantastic.

"On a personal level it would be great to see him again and great for the fans to see him back here again. But on a professional one I hope he doesn't play against us.

"He had been training with us for a few weeks - I only hope he wasn't spying on us and that the manager hadn't left any of his notes lying around!"
