Tottenham were willing to make Sevilla coach Juande Ramos the highest paid manager in the Premiership, it has been revealed.

The London Evening Standard says Tottenham were so desperate to persuade Ramos to move to White Hart Lane they offered to make him the highest paid manager in the Premier League on an incredible £6.2million-a-year.

The deal was put to the Sevilla coach during a second meeting after he had rejected their initial approach.

Ramos described the first contract, believed to be worth in the region of £3m-a-season, as 'dizzying', the second was double yet the 53-year-old Spaniard still said no.

Ramos refused to sign the pre-contract agreement that would have seen him takeover at Tottenham next summer because he still believes a bigger club than Spurs will want him as their boss next season.

Chairman Daniel Levy's decision to eclipse the £5.2m-a-year paid to Jose Mourinho when he was at Stamford Bridge is a sign of the ambition being shown by the Tottenham board.
