TOTTENHAM v NEWCASTLE RECAP: Magpies complete stunning fightback at Spurs

Newcastle United have strung two Premier League wins together for the first time since November 2014.

The Magpies, who beat Liverpool last weekend, came from behind to end Tottenham's 14-game unbeaten streak with a 2-1 result at White Hart Lane thanks to late goals from substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez.

Spurs hit the front in the 39th minute when Eric Dier met Christian Eriksen's corner at the front post with a glancing header that got past Rob Elliot who produced some top-quality saves to deny the home side throughout the contest.

Newcastle made the most of the brilliant performance of their keeper by levelling on 74 minutes through Mitrovic who poked home from close range after a goalmouth scramble before Perez received a cushioned header from the Serbian striker, took a touch, then fired beneath Hugo Lloris from an angle to win it for the Toon in injury-time.

The victory sees Steve McClaren's Newcastle move away from the relegation zone and into 15th position as Mauricio Pochettino's Spurs remained fifth after just their second defeat of the season.

MATCH OVERVIEW

Tottenham: 1 (Eric Dier 39')
Newcastle United: 2 (Aleksandar Mitrovic 74', Ayoze Perez 90+3')
White Hart Lane, London - 35,768

TALKING POINTS

- Is this the start of a positive run for Newcastle? Two wins against bigger clubs will surely have improved the morale of McClaren's men.

- Just a blip for Tottenham. They had not been beaten since opening day and created enough chances to win had it not been for the heroics of Elliot.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Newcastle will now get ready to host bottom-placed Aston Villa next weekend as Tottenham head to St Mary's to meet Pochettino's former club Southampton.

QUOTES CORNER

Newcastle's McClaren on the display of his Magpies:

"I thought the players were fantastic today. It's answered the critics we have had over last four weeks and it was a great performance in the second half and a great result.

"We have asked for consistency and the last two weeks they have provided that and it has brought everyone closer together."

Tottenham boss Pochettino on his side's failure to put Newcastle away:

"One nil up always gives the opponents the chance to come back into the game.

"We lost concentration and made easy mistakes, we started to give the opponents the belief they can win the game.

"The chances that we conceded were easy for Newcastle, we need to analyse the game."
