Tottenham target Cole tells Chelsea he wants to stay

Joe Cole has told Chelsea management he wants to stay at Stamford Bridge.

The Times says the England midfield player has attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur for the third time in his career, with Harry Redknapp, the North London club's manager, hoping that the prospect of regular first-team football in a season that finishes with the World Cup finals in South Africa may be enough to lure him away from Stamford Bridge. However, Cole would rather stay and battle to secure his place at Chelsea.

Cole's situation is complicated by the fact that he has less than 12 months remaining on his contract. Chelsea are in the process of putting together an improved package worth around £100,000 a week, but are waiting to see how Cole recovers from a serious knee injury before opening formal negotiations.
