Tottenham striker Defoe wants Rooney chance with England

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe wants the chance to develop an England partnership with Manchester United's Wayne Rooney.

Defoe partnered Rooney after Emile Heskey was dropped at the World Cup and believes their partnership should be given further time to flourish.

"Maybe I have an advantage because I think we have developed a bit of an understanding over time," Defoe told the London Evening Standard.

"At the World Cup, we played well together at times. It wasn't a successful competition, obviously, and as a team we didn't play as well as we can. There were many reasons for that but me and Wazza can definitely play together.

"He is great to play with. You know when you make a run and he has the ball, he can pick you out and he is a great lad to have around the place. Wazza is a world-class player and I enjoy playing with him. I think we'll get better the more we play together and I hope we'd get the chance to do that."
