Tottenham striker Defoe hoping England brace earns him Montenegro start

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe hopes to start for England tomorrow in Montenegro.

Defoe is hoping his goals and performance in England's eight-goal victory over San Marino will have helped him to stake a claim to start against Montenegro.

He said: "It's good for confidence. Sometimes you play in games like this and it can be a horrible game when you don't play well but still win. But we had a good result and a good performance and that's very encouraging.

"All the things we worked on in training came off and it all went well, so the manager is happy. The lads are more than experienced to go into a second game and do the same.

"Obviously it will be a tougher game but with the players we have and how we're playing at the minute I think we can do the same."
