Tottenham striker Defoe determined to make England World Cup squad

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe admits he's desperate to make England's World Cup squad.

The Spurs striker was linked with a summer switch to the MLS with Toronto FC, who are looking to capitalise on the 31-year-old's apparent unhappiness at his lack of playing time since Roberto Soldado's £26million move to White Hart Lane.

"It's a big year for everyone," said Defoe. "It's always in the back of your mind that you want to get on the plane to Brazil. Everyone has to play well for your clubs and then it is based on merit for any World Cup squad.

"If I was playing games and didn't look like scoring there would be a problem, but I hit the post twice and on another day I could have had a hat-trick. The most important thing for a striker is to look dangerous and sharp and I did that.

"I feel really fresh and strong and I'm not tired towards the end of the game. That's great as I can still make my runs even towards the end and get chances. We just need to keep winning.

"A lot of people were asking questions and I think we have answered them in the last two games."
