The pair played together at Liverpool.
Crouch said: "If you're shirking your responsibilities on the pitch, Craig is the first one to dig you out for it and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
"I remember he had only been at Liverpool a week and he was shouting and screaming at me during one training session.
"Afterwards I pulled him aside and asked him what it was all about. He just said 'I forget'.
"He doesn't know he does it, he says that's the way he plays and he has to shout to get himself geed up and that's fully understandable.
"Craig's very sparky and a great character to have around. He's a good lad. He gets a lot of stick but he only wants to win.
"What everyone sees is him on the pitch but I've spent time with him off the pitch and he's very knowledgeable about the game the same way Jamie Carragher is.
"He knows every stat, he can spot a player and you can speak to him very intelligently about football."
When it was pointed out that Bellamy also attacked his team-mate with a golf club, Crouch laughed: "Yeah, of course, there's that side to him as well."
