Tottenham signing van der Vaart aims to hit the ground running

New Tottenham signing Rafael van der Vaart admits he needs to adapt to life quickly in the Premier League, if he is to make the impact expected. The midfield star joined Tottenham on deadline day as Spurs sealed an £8million deal with Real Madrid.

"I must adapt quickly to the country, the life and the football. But I don't think that will be a problem for a Dutch footballer who has already worked in Germany and Spain," he told The People.

"During the summer I had many offers from big European clubs, but my challenge was to play for Real Madrid and work with Jose Mourinho.

"After the club confirmed I was no longer in their plans, the best solution was to leave. Tottenham were interested for some time but it wasn't feasible until the last moment.

"The offer arrived on Tuesday morning and I had little time to decide, but I hope I have luck in my new adventure.

"My wife supported the choice and we are prepared for the change from Madrid to London.

"I have played many matches against Premier League clubs and the quality is enormous. I hope Spurs are successful but, for now, all I can promise is hard work.

"Many footballers dream of playing in England and now I have this chance.

"Tottenham are one of the biggest clubs in England, and this season the fact we are playing in the Champions League means it is a great club to be at."
