Tottenham's Kane pondered change of allegiance - Ireland boss O'Neill

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill has revealed that Harry Kane once pondered playing for him.

The Tottenham striker, 21, has been a star at youth level for England but was the subject of interest from Ireland who were chasing him up last summer.

Kane's father was born in Galway, making him eligible to play for Ireland, but O'Neill says the youngster's fine form this season has him only eyeing a berth in England's national senior setup.

"I was talking to somebody about this last night and we were just saying that Harry himself always wanted to play for England. Really, it was as simple as that," he said.

"The order of events - though I don't think it's really important any more - is that initially the agent got in touch and said that he would have a keen interest, and we wanted to go and chase it up.

"But then I noticed in the newspaper where he said he wanted to play for England. And that has remained the same. Someone was even speaking to him recently and that was exactly the same conversation. Fine, if that's the case."
