Tottenham's Defoe: Good club form will get me to South Africa

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe is remaining focused on the task at hand at club level rather than getting too caught up in his World Cup squad chances. The England international, fresh from a five-goal haul against Wigan on Sunday, knows just how important it is to perform well for his club and help them win games before contemplating being selected for Fabio Capello's 23-man squad for South Africa next year.

"It's the World Cup year and that is at the back of your mind but it's important to focus on your club, keep your head down and give yourself the best opportunity to get on the plane. That is all I can do," Defoe said.

His plan is to continue scoring goals for Spurs and help them win as many games as possible in the Premier League.

"In my first season here I got 22," Defoe added. "I just want to keep doing it. At the end of the day it's good for the club if I score goals because it means we are winning games."
