Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has had his potential groin surgery cancelled in a major boost for both club and country.

The 27-year old Spurs hitman was reportedly set to undergo surgery for a troublesome groin last week but has decided against it after getting through his last two matches with no worries.

Defoe felt no pain in Tottenham’s Champions League qualification win over Swiss club Young Boys a week and a half ago and then played a full 90 minutes in the 1-0 league loss to Wigan Athletic on Saturday, indicating he would not need to go under the knife.

He is now expected to take his place in the starting line-up for Fabio Capello’s England in a Euro2012 qualifier against Bulgaria at Wembley on Friday and it is highly likely that the mooted operation will be put to the side for the time being.
