Tottenham No2 Kevin Bond admits they cannot afford to stand still this summer.
Bond says it could be a battle to match last season's fifth place finish.
"It seems to me that if you do nothing, you go backwards," he said. "Everybody seems to have improved. They've all been out in the market.
"Liverpool, again, have made some shrewd acquisitions and I think it will be tougher still to get in the top four - tougher than it was last year.
"We're going to be trying to hang on in if we can but it's going to be a really competitive league this year."
