Tottenham need Champions League football to win the battle for Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen.
The London Evening Standard says Tottenham will battle Arsenal to sign Vertonghen from Ajax after opening talks with the Dutch club yesterday.
The final price for Vertonghen is likely to be close to £10million, but securing Champions League football is key to the 25-year-old's thinking.
