Tottenham defender Ledley King is set to announce his retirement from international football.
The Daily Star says King told England yesterday that he feared wrecking his club future if he turned out for his country again. In a heart-to-heart meeting with England medical staff, King spelt out his concerns, with the centre-back fearing another injury setback.
The 28-year-old was initially thrilled to be recalled to the squad for the games with Slovakia and Ukraine by coach Fabio Capello.
However, it is understood that after talking with pals he realised the dangers of further damage to his troublesome knee while on England duty.
King had hoped his vastly improved record this season would lead the White Hart Lane club to open talks about a new contract, but no move has yet been made.
It now appears King has decided it is better to be safe than sorry and has reluctantly opted to put club before country.
