Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld insists they can handle the absence of Jan Vertonghen.

Tottenham are sweating on the defender's fitness after he injured his ankle against West Brom on Saturday.

Alderweireld said: “First of all we hope Jan is not injured too long. But if he is injured there are a lot of people who can play in his place and bring the level he brings. People will have to step up.

“We will see over the next couple of days and hopefully it is not too bad."

Boss Mauricio Pochettino added: “We are very disappointed and feel very bad that Jan is injured."
