Despite the narrow 1-0 scoreline Tottenham were good value for their defeat of relegation threatened Newcastle at White Hart Lane. Darren Bent's first-half effort proved to be decisive, but the victory should have been more emphatic.
Newcastle have now gone eight games without a win.
The visitors Obafemi Martins did have a goal chalked off for handball on 68 minutes, but a dejected Magpies side offered few threats.
"It was a good win and another clean sheet. We had opportunities to score more but I was pleased - our defensive record is incredible.
"You win 1-0 and that's what good teams do," enthused Spurs boss Harry Redknapp.
