Tottenham claim first league win over Arsenal in 11 years

Arsenal's hopes of winning the Premiership lie in tatters after a 2-1 defeat to bitter rivals Tottenham at White Hart Lane. For Spurs, their own pursuit of a Champions League place still remains a possibility as they closed the gap on fourth placed Manchester City to one point.

The hosts got off to the best possible start with a goal after only ten minutes.

The ball broke to Premier League debutant Danny Rose who crashed a superb 30-yard volley past Manuel Almunia.

This early goal give the home side the confidence to dominate the first half and when Gareth Bale tapped in Spurs' second from close range barely a minute into the second half the points seemed secure.

But Arsenal rallied Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes made three fine saves on the occasions the visitors breached a dogged Tottenham rearguard.

Fit-again Robin van Persie came on after 68 minutes for his first appearance in five months and inspired Arsenal to a late rally, which saw Nicklas Bendtner pull one back in the 85th minute.

Arsenal continued to press but Spurs held out to record their first victory over their arch rivals in 20 attempts.

This result leaves the Gunners six points off league leaders Chelsea with just four games remaining in the title race.
