Tottenham captain King: I am no England gamble

Tottenham captain Ledley King insists his England World Cup selection will not be a gamble.

The 29-year-old's form at the business end of the campaign is set to be rewarded with a place in Fabio Capello's initial 30-man squad on Tuesday.

King said: "I couldn't play two games a week throughout an entire season, but there are definitely times when I can come through it.

"If I am coming back from an injury and I am faced with three games in a week, that's when I have problems. But if I get some consistency and rhythm there are times when I am able to tell the manager I can play games in a short space of time.

"Obviously, throughout an entire season it will be hard for me to do that - but I have never said to anybody that it isn't possible if I pick and choose my games.

"For example, it wasn't a gamble to play against Manchester City just a few days after playing against Bolton because my knee felt OK.

"I just have to get on with it. The knee will never get better, but if I can manage my fitness in the right way I can get by.

"I do a lot of work in the gym and in the pool. Then I always pack the knee with ice. It is only the day before I am playing a game that I actually get to train with a ball."
