Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has backed Stuart Pearce's claim that Gareth Bale snubbed last year's British Olympics squad.
AVB also admits it would have been "difficult" for Spurs to keep hold of the winger after he expressed such a strong desire to join Real Madrid.
Villas-Boas said: "It is very strong words from Stuart. I think there is some kind of a case on what he says if you compare it to what happened with Spain (and fielding a strong squad). With Gareth we had problems with niggles here and there and we decided to keep him.
"We wish him (Bale) all the best. It would have been made easier with him but in the end we were in a position where we had to think what would be the consequences of our acts, and how difficult it would have been to bring the player back to a level of motivation to play for us."
