Bale produced a series of rescue acts to get his old side out of the mire before heading to Real Madrid last summer.
Sherwood said: "I think whenever you've got a player like Andros, he can change a game in an instant.
"He gets you off your seat and is exciting to watch. He had a great start to the season. We're just hoping he can pick up that tempo again and drive on.
"Andros can do something different. He can go past people, turn a bad performance into a fantastic result like Gareth Bale did last year.
"He would like to add more goals to his game, but he is still learning the process. I have known him since he was a baby and he has gradually got better so he is going in the right direction.
"Townsend will be desperate to hit the running with the World Cup looming."
