Harry Redknapp is prepared to offer Portsmouth goalkeeper a long-term deal to lure him to Tottenham.
The Spurs boss is keen on James who is determined to leave Fratton Park in order to bolster his World Cup chances with the England team.
It is understood that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is concerned about signing a 39-year old but Redknapp is attempting to talk him into signing James on a two-year deal with the chance of a coaching job afterwards.
The fact that Spurs already have Heurelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini on the books as goalkeepers may make it hard for Levy to say yes to a move but Redknapp seems determined to get his man.
