Tottenham boss Redknapp: I never walked out on Portsmouth

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp insists he never walked out of Portsmouth last season.

Redknapp says it was more like he was pushed towards White Hart Lane when Spurs came calling.

Redknapp revealed to the News of the World: "I rang Peter (Storrie) on the mobile and said: 'Look I don't really want to go through with this. I think I'll go back home.'

"As much as I thought Tottenham's a great club and it was a good move for me I didn't see any reason why I should leave Portsmouth. My life was good. I lived half an hour from the training ground, we had just won the FA Cup, were in Europe and going good in the league again.

"All the promises and plans of the owner, Sacha Gaydamak, seemed to be falling into place. The word was that the building of a new stadium and training ground would go ahead.

"Tottenham, on the other hand, were rock bottom. Two points from eight games. But Peter said to me: 'You are mad. It's a great opportunity for you, Harry. You should talk to them.'

"At that moment I realised he had spoken to the owner and they were getting a £5million 'fee' from Tottenham for me.

"They saw that as a lot of money for a manager when they thought Tony Adams could come in and replace me.

"It wasn't, 'Don't go Harry'. It was more, 'Oh you'd be mad NOT to go'. So I thought, well, if that is the situation I'll go and speak to Daniel (Levy). And when I heard the ambition; that the plans for the stadium had all been passed and money was REALLY in place, and with the potential of the players and the ability to bring some new ones in, then I thought it's a great move. And maybe I have done all I can at Portsmouth."
