Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp says the praise Martin O'Neill has won for buying English at Aston Villa is misplaced.
Redknapp is full of admiration for O'Neill, but he is not falling for the line that O'Neill has only sought out the top young English talent with which to supplement his squad even though he signed Ashley Young from Watford.
He said: "You can get carried away with saying that. Martin has signed good players. Petrov, Cuellar, Friedel, Carew, none are English. Neither is Laursen, the centre half who's been the backbone of the team, while Gareth Barry was there already, so was Agbonlahor.
"You can't go out to sign young players just because they're English. But the man is a good manager. He knows his job. He's done a fantastic job there, as he has wherever he's been."
