Tottenham intend to make a £15 million summer offer for Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing.
The Sunday Mirror says manager Harry Redknapp made an unsuccessful attempt to sign the 24-year-old during the January transfer window, when Downing went as far as to ask for a move from Middlesbrough.
But the request was rejected and Redknapp became the second Tottenham manager to try, and fail, to secure Downing.
Martin Jol, one of Redknapp's predecessors, was also unsuccessful at the start of last season.
The current White Hart Lane boss, though, is determined to get his man. He sees Downing as one of the final pieces in the Tottenham jigsaw.
Downing is naturally left-sided and Redknapp feels he will bring the ideal balance to his line-up to complement the thrust down the right provided by Aaron Lennon.
