Tottenham boss Redknapp: Capello use of Rooney spot on

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp hailed the tactics of England coach Fabio Capello in victory over Bulgaria.

For his column with The Sun, Redknapp argued: "It probably looked to some as if Wayne Rooney was running around without any real sense of purpose.

"And for a striker of his calibre to go the whole of the first half without a single shot on goal suggests he had a poor game.

"But I am having none of that as Fabio Capello made arguably his best decision of his topsy-turvy time as England boss by giving Roo a totally free rein.

"We saw Rooney running aggressively hard from midfield, Rooney on the left, Rooney on the right and Rooney dropping into the hole behind goalscorer Jermain Defoe.

"Manchester United ace Rooney is STILL England's main threat.

"He is able to play that free role to devastating effect, just as Mesut Ozil did so effectively for Germany in the World Cup."
