Tottenham ahead of Chelsea in battle for Anderlecht sensation Lukaku

Tottenham are favourites to land Anderlecht sensation Romelu Lukaku.

The Daily Mail says the Belgian side rated the 17-year-old - who has been compared to Chelsea star Didier Drogba - at £26million as recently as January but a slump in form means they are likely to now accept an offer in the region of £17.5m in the summer for a powerful, pacey player who has already represented Belgium.

Harry Redknapp has been frustrated by his failure to bolster his strikeforce in the past year, something which has been compounded by the mediocre form of his current forwards.

Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Roman Pavlyuchenko have scored just 27 goals between them in all competitions this season, among that a paltry 11 in the Barclays Premier League.

And while Lukaku is too young to be considered an immediate answer to the problem, he has more than enough talent to be seen as an excellent long-term investment and his arrival could be paid for by offloading Pavlyuchenko, Defoe or Robbie Keane, who is on loan at West Ham.

Lukaku has scored 12 times for Anderlecht and twice for his country this season but has only netted three times since Christmas.
