Toronto FC arrival of QPR’s Nelsen thrills ex-Leeds defender O’Dea

Darren O’Dea admits he is excited about the arrival of new Toronto FC head coach Ryan Nelsen.

The QPR defender will officially take charge of the Canadian club on February 1 after he plays his final game for the R’s after not knowing exactly when he would be free to lead his new club.

But now a date has been set, Republic of Ireland international centre-back O’Dea cannot wait.

“Certainly it was something I was concerned with when he was first appointed,” O’Dea said.

“I was delighted with the appointment and obviously sad for (sacked coach) Paul (Mariner) because he’s a fantastic man.

“I’m obviously delighted with that (Nelsen taking over full-time in Feb) and the first few days of training have been fantastic. He’s played at the top level at my position so he’s going to teach me a lot.”
