TOP 5: Who are Tottenham’s best foreigners?

With the international break upon us, we wanted to take a look at some foreigners who have previously donned the Tottenham shirt.

Spurs are enjoying a solid run of form in the Premier League on the back of some strong performances from the likes of Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen, Argentine attacking midfielder Erik Lamela, Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld and South Korean striker Son Heung-min.

With that in mind, tribalfootball.com has taken a look at the foreigner players that have had the most influence at White Hart Lane during the Premier League era.

TOTTENHAM'S TOP 5 FOREIGNERS
*And no, we are not counting Gareth Bale or Robbie Keane!

5. Dimitar Berbatov

The Bulgarian striker rose to prominence with Bayer Leverkusen in Germany before Spurs snapped him up in the summer of 2006.

Full of poise, balance, grace and a hint of laziness, Berbatov scored 27 Premier League goals for a total of 46 in 102 outings in all competitions for the North Londoners.

Scored a cool equalising penalty in the 2008 League Cup triumph against London rivals Chelsea and also won a place in the Premier League Team of the Year in his first campaign in the UK in 2006/07.

Now with Greek club PAOK, Berbatov was also Spurs' Player of the Year the season and excelled in the Europa League with

Manchester United signed him from Tottenham two years after he arrived at The Lane, for three times the £10m Spurs outlaid on him, indicating his tenure in the capital was a success.

4. Luka Modric

Croatian midfielder Modric has had the most influence at White Hart Lane of foreign players over the past seven or eight years.

Arriving from Dinamo Zagreb for close to £16million in 2008, the diminutive combatant oozed class and quality on the ball.

Modric was a major factor in Tottenham's successful Champions League run in 2010/11 and also clinched that season's Player of the Year.

His time spent with Spurs set him up for a massive £30m move to Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2012 and although it did disappoint the faithful, nobody could begrudge his ambition.

3. Rafael van der Vaart

Spurs fans could not believe their eyes or ears, nor could Harry Redknapp, when Spurs signed VDV from Real Madrid for just £8million.

The German attacking midfielder started brilliantly with plenty of goals and assists early in his Tottenham career, highlighted by important strikes against fierce North London rivals Arsenal.

Van der Vaart was a major reason for Tottenham's fourth-placed finish in the 2012 Premier League season and like Modric, was a key engineer in the club's positive Champions League campaign in 2010/11.

He may have only spent two years with Spurs, but the signing of van der Vaart captured the imagination of the Tottenham hierarchy who would have thought the sky was the limit after that.

Van der Vaart returned to former club Hamburg after finishing up with Tottenham and is currently playing in Sain with Real Betis.

2. David Ginola

The flying Frenchman only spent three seasons with Spurs but his influence cannot be denied.

Ginola was a key reason why Spurs were not relegated in his debut season at The Lane in 1997/98 after moving down south from Newcastle United.

The following season, the former Paris Saint-Germain star guided Tottenham to 1999 League Cup glory as well as the semi-finals of the FA Cup and a passable 11th place finish in the league.

Ginola was crowned the Professional Footballers'Association (PFA) Player of the Year (the only player to do so whose side finished outside the top four) as well as the Football Writers' Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year that season in what was a stunning return in only his sophomore campaign in North London.

After providing a deluge of dazzle and dramatics on the wings, Ginola eventually left Spurs the following year after falling out with George Graham but departed with a place lodged deep in the hearts of the faithful.

1. Jurgen Klinsmann

The German arrived in England with a reputation as a player who would make the most out of any challenge that was made near him.

That was not something Tottenham supporters were all too fond of back in 1994 but Klinsmann soon shook the 'diver' tag and endeared himself to the most ardent of Spurs.

His arrival in England not long after the Premier League was formed was seen as a fairly significant move considering he had just performed brilliantly for Germany at the 1994 World Cup and had a prolific record elsewhere in Europe with AS Monaco, Inter Milan and VfB Stuttgart.

The current USA national team manager announced his arrival in England by producing a self-deprecating dive celebration after scoring on debut against Sheffield Wednesday, which sparked a fad with kids all around England emulating their new hero.

During his only full season in North London, before moving to German giants Bryan Munich, Klinsmann scored over 20 goals in all competitions to win the 1995 Football Writers' Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year before returning on loan from Sampdoria late in the 1997/98 campaign and firing the cub to safety.

Special mention

Steffen Iversen

Not necessarily a household name but Iversen had a positive impact at Spurs.

The Norwegian striker netted 47 goals in just under 180 appearances for Spurs after arriving from Rosenborg in 1996.

Iversen was the creator of the only goal in the 1999 League Cup final win over Leicester City, which was scored by Allan Nielsen, which highlights his contribution to the North London club who have secured just three trophies since 1990.

Probably failed to earn the esteem he may have deserved during his spell at White Hart Lane but was nonetheless an important player over seven years from late 1996 until early 2004.

Also featured in the 2002 League Cup final loss to Blackburn Rovers as a second-half substitute.
