TOP 5: Rags to riches! Who are the best Premier League players with non-league experience?

The rapid rise of Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy from non-league football to Premier League record-holder is an inspirational tale.

Vardy's goal against Manchester United last weekend saw the 28-year-old break Ruud van Nistelrooy's previous record for most consecutive Premier League games with a goal.

Vardy now sits atop the goal-scoring charts in England's top flight with 14 in as many appearances this season after once plying his trade in the country's lowest division of professional football.

However, Vardy isn't the only former non-league player to leave his mark on the Premier League.

tribalfootball.com has taken a closer look at some gems, paying tribute to the top five current EPL stars with non-league experience.

5. Danny Ings (Dorchester Town)

Prior to joining Liverpool, Ings spent the first three seasons of his professional career with Bournemouth, during which time he was sent on loan to Conference South side Dorchester Town.

His debut for the Magpies came on September 11, 2010, as he scored the equaliser in a 2–1 home defeat to Ebbsfleet United.

Ings was prolific during his nine-match stint with Dorchester Town, finding the back of the net on four occasions.

The following season, Ings was picked up by Championship outfit Burnley, for whom he made 122 appearances, scoring 38 goals, before securing his dream move to Anfield this summer.

Ings was handed his first England cap in the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania on October 13, 2015.

4. Chris Smalling (Maidstone United)

After a spell at Millwall's youth academy, current Manchester United defender Smalling started his professional career at National League South outfit Maidstone United.

Smalling made his first-team debut for 'The Stones' on 11 April 2007 in a 4–1 loss against Tonbridge Angels in the Kent Senior Cup.

In total, Smalling made 12 first team appearances for Maidstone during the 2007/08 campaign, before being signed by Fulham the following season.

Smalling joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2010 and has made more than 100 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils.

The 26-year-old has also earned 21 caps for the England national team.

3. Ashley Williams (Hednesford Town)

Williams started his career at National League North outfit Hednesford Town, spending two seasons at the club and making 60 appearances between 2001 and 2003.

A move to Stockport County followed, with Williams racking up 162 league appearances, before joining current club Swansea in 2007/08, when the club were in League One.

Williams has been an ever-present in the Swans incredible rise to the Premier League and now captains the club after making more than 300 first team appearances in all competitions.

The 31-year-old is also the captain of the Welsh national team, with 56 international caps to his name.

2. Jamie Vardy (Fleetwood Town)

Vardy was in scintillating form during his first season at Fleetwood, scoring 31 goals in just 36 appearances.

The breakout performance caught the attention of Championship outfit Leicester City, who spent a reported £1million to sign Vardy, breaking the transfer fee record for a non-league player in the process.

Vardy has scored 39 goals in 111 appearances for the Foxes, but it is his streak of scoring in 11 consecutive Premier League fixtures that has captured the attention of football fans across the globe.

Vardy has been rewarded for his scintillating form this season with four England national team caps.

1. Joe Hart (Shrewsbury Town)
